Exterior Painting Season in Toronto: When to Book and Why It Matters

When exterior painters can actually paint in Toronto — humidity, dew point, and overnight low rules — and why booking 4–8 weeks ahead saves you money.
Toronto's painting season is shorter than most homeowners realize. Here's how we plan exterior projects through the year — and why early bookings get the best windows.
The window: late May to early October
Most exterior coatings need overnight lows above 10°C, daytime highs below 32°C, dew point gaps wide enough to prevent condensation, and dry weather for at least 24 hours after application. In Toronto that effectively means late May through early October — about 18 weeks of reliable painting time.
Why prime windows (June and September) book first
- June: long days, low humidity, predictable weather.
- September: cooler highs, less rain, lower bug pressure.
- Mid-July to mid-August: hot, humid, sometimes stormy — still workable but slower.
- Late October onward: nightly dew points and cold soil moisture cause coating failures.
How far ahead to book
- Small exterior touch-ups: 2–3 weeks lead time
- Single-storey exterior repaint: 4–6 weeks
- Two-storey detached: 6–8 weeks
- Brick or estate exteriors: 8–12 weeks
What we monitor on every exterior project
- Surface temperature (not just air temperature)
- Dew point spread
- Wind speed (above 25 km/h shuts down spray work)
- 24-hour rain forecast
- Sun exposure on wall being painted
Off-season exterior work
Outside the season we still tackle small touch-ups, garage doors, soffits, and protected exterior trim under the right conditions. For full repaints though, we'll always recommend waiting for the right window — the cost of repainting a failed exterior in two years is far higher than the cost of patience.
